During the fourth quarter of 2009, the Facilities Management Department at Grossmont Union High School District focused on the construction of the eight Science Buildings under Proposition H; the initiation of schematic design on Phase 3BR as well as numerous Proposition U projects and the close out of the completed modernization projects. This quarterly progress report, produced for the Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee and the community in general attempts to summarize key program components.
Phase 2B: This phase of modernization has been completed at several campuses including Grossmont, Helix, El Cajon, El Capitan, Granite Hills, Monte Vista, Santana, Valhalla, West Hills, Special Education and Foothills Adult School. At Mount Miguel Phase 2B work is ongoing with Building 700E nearing completion, and Building 900 ready to begin. At Steele Canyon High School the HVAC project design is complete and will be bid in early 2010. Design work at Viking Center and Work Training Center has resumed with a target bidding timeframe in the Fall of 2010. To date, 276 classroom modernizations of the 291 classrooms in this phase have been completed.
Phase 3A: This new construction phase of 72 state of the art science classrooms and laboratories made steady progress at eight district campuses. Heavy construction is on-going at seven locations with activities including steel erection, underground utilities, exterior and interior framing, roofing installation, fiber cement siding and drywall installation and fire sprinklers. In December 2009, the first 8 new science classrooms at El Cajon Valley High School were completed. Turnover of these classrooms to the campus is targeted for February 1, 2010.
Phase 3BR: Schematic design of the remaining Proposition H projects in this phase was initiated this quarter. In addition, staff developed and implemented a design review program and a complimentary tracking system hosted on Sharepoint to aid in monitoring schedule, budget and scope. This tool is utilized for Proposition U projects as well.
New School
Escrow has closed on two of the six parcels needed for the new high school. Appraisal work and negotiations are ongoing for the remaining parcels. Community meetings were held this quarter to gather public input on the school design and educational focus. Several design concepts developed are the basis of discussion with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other agencies from which permit or approvals is required.
Proposition U
Schematic design for projects funded by Proposition U began at Grossmont, Helix, El Cajon Valley, Mount Miguel, El Capitan, Granite Hills, Monte Vista, Santana, Valhalla and Chaparral. In addition, the conceptual designs were initiated for the swimming pools at Granite Hills, West Hills and Steele Canyon. During the summer, track projects at El Cajon Valley, Mount Miguel and West Hills were completed.
